چکیده

This note reports studies conducted in Australia to study the effectiveness of a new mosquito repellent formulation containing 20% N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (deet) and 0.5% permethrin in a bar of soap. The active ingredients are not new. Deet has gained wide acceptance and is used in many countries throughout the world (Rutledge et al. 1978a). Its effects against many arthropod species have been studied, and these have shown it is effective against a number of insects genera (Rutledge et al. 1978b, Schreck 1977). More recently, the effectiveness of permethrin as a clothing impregnation or pressurized spray for personal protection against mosquitoes, ticks and biting flies has been demonstrated (Lindsay and McAndless 1978; Shreck et al.1982, 1984,1986). The soap formulation warranted study as it is cheap to produce; a 70g block costing about $US 0.25, and encouraging results have been reported against mosquitoes in Malaysia (Yap 1986).

Permethrin-impregnated military uniform protection against different species of biting insects: narrative review

Today personal protection measures against mosquitoes and other medically important arthropods have a significant role in integrated vector management programs. Personal protection technologies such as insecticide-treated clothes and nets are some of the most effective tools against mosquitoes. Permethrin, as a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, with features such as having a knockdown, repellen...

Field bioassays of permethrin-treated uniforms and a new extended duration repellent against mosquitoes in Pakistan.

Field bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment combinations of permethrin-impregnated clothing and a new extended duration repellent formulation of deet against natural populations of mosquitoes in Islamabad, Pakistan. Tests were initiated 2-2 1/2 hours prior to sunset and volunteers who wore the topical repellent applied it 8 hours earlier. The most effecti...

Effectiveness of soap formulations containing deet and permethrin as personal protection against outdoor mosquitoes in Malaysia.

Two soap formulations, both containing 20% deet and one each containing permethrin at 0.5 and 1.0%, respectively, were applied to exposed arms and legs of volunteers as personal protection against outdoor human biting mosquitoes in six locations on Penang Island, Malaysia. The predominant mosquito species collected from these locations were Aedes albopictus, Mansonia uniformis, Culex gelidus, A...

Relative repellency of two formulations of N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (deet) and permethrin-treated clothing against Culex sitiens and Aedes vigilax in Thailand.

Field tests were conducted to compare the effectiveness of 2 repellent formulations of N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (deet) in combination with permethrin-impregnated military uniforms against Culex sitiens and Aedes vigilax in Thailand. Repellency was determined during a 2 h crepuscular period using volunteers who had been treated with repellents 6, 8, 10, and 12 h prior to the end of each tes...

Efficacy of topical permethrin as repellent against Aedes aegypti's bites.

Mosquitoes are the most important vectors of infectious diseases and their bites are related to several adverse skin reactions. Permethrin impregnated clothes are an efficient strategy against arthropods' bites; however, its topical efficacy as a repellent has not been well established. We studied the response to permethrin lotion 5 percent and N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) spray 50 percent...
